Zaanse Schans, windmills
The Zaanse Schans is a delightful old hamlet on the banks of the river Zaan with characteristic green wooden houses, charming styalised gardens, small hump-backed bridges, tradesmen's workshops, historic windmills and engaging little shops. This enchanting hamlet gives an excellent impression of how a typical Zaanse village must have looked like in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. For more information:

City Walks
The best way to explore the city is with a local Amsterdammer! Join one of the walks guided by a volunteer of the Gilde Amsterdam ‘Mee in Mokum’. Mokum is a slang name for Amsterdam. The guides are all over the age of 50 and have lived in the city for many years. They show you Amsterdam from their personal perspective. Mee in Mokum works with small groups and small prices, and the tours are in Dutch, English, German and French. For more information:

The historic fishing villages of Volendam, Marken and Edam are best-known for their characteristic wooden houses, water sports, traditional costumes and fresh fish. Tucked away on the coast of the former Zuiderzee (a North Sea inlet), now the IJsselmeer (Lake IJssel), these villages have preserved their character for many centuries.
